'Miranda' Wall tile.

Miranda is a surface tile whose ‘hairs’ can be manipulated to create different shades in its surface. These shades can be used as a medium for illustration, communication or simply intriguing visual effect.
Miranda is an adaptable wall mural measuring 3 square metres and composing of silicone wall base tiles with over 65,000 injection moulded polypropylene 'hairs' sitting in tiny ball and socket joints in the surface of the wall. These hairs can then be brushed in different directions rather like grass on a football pitch to create shades and patterns or images on the wall.

A FACTORY VISIT - HMT (SUFFOLK)

Having visited HMT (who were exceptionally helpful and accommodating - contact me for their details) I have ordered a tool for the refined hair part. It will be complete in three weeks. Then a sample batch of a few hundred will be sent through to RCA, and upon confimation from myself the tool will produce 70,000 parts for a 4 metre squared section of this new surface... 70,000!!!

The 'hairy' project has become the major player for this summers project launches. Here the hair has been refined and its thickness and aesthetic lends itself well to the concept of drawing with shades. Full moon... half moon... total eclipse!! Scaled-up I hope this surface will intrigue and delight... 4 metres squared is planned for the RCA show in late June.

The NakedLego table as seen in Milan at the Platform 10 show in the seves glass showroom. NakedLego went down well... still not sure how I will post-rationalise a simple idea to gruelling RCA tutors, but the romance in re-using such nostalgic and loved building blocks from my past is enough for now.

Wih Chester, the fact that she is inspired by a classic design, aesthetically, is the concept of the piece. The material and construction is irrelevant and can therefore be designed in many ways... whatever is appropriate... as long as she stays true to the original concept of classic British inspiration. This however, means that she is a NEW form, losely based on the old aesthetic, but modernised.

The Lego project is a new material in a sense, and thus should not be combined with radical new forms as that would over-complicate the design. To combine a new esthetic and a new material is a positive step, but when the new matrial is made up of old design, that is the trick and the conept, and that is as much as the piece should say.
